Muscle Beach Gym

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY:

Visit, watch a show or work-out at Muscle Beach Gym.  A day pass is $10, a week pass is $50 and a year membership is $170.  Also, most of the people who work out at Muscle Beach Gym, will not mind if you ask to take a photo with them.

ABOUT MUSCLE BEACH GYM:

Located steps from the sand on Venice Beach Boardwalk, Muscle Beach Gym is one of the treasures of Venice.  Once the home gym of bodybuilders Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, the newly outfitted facility still serves the community as the only outdoor weight room around.

The equipment is well maintained by the staff of City of L.A. Recreation and Parks and a yearly pass is only $170, a week membership $50 and a $10 day rate.  There are plenty of bumpers for all your Power and Olympic lifting needs and most of the bars are straight.  If you are into pumping iron or just want to see a piece of living history, then stop by Muscle Beach Gym.

WEIGHT-PEN RULES:

Members only.
No guest or children permitted inside.
Day pass or membership required. NO free entry.
T-shirt or towels and closed toe shoes required to workout.
Day pass or membership required. NO free entry
No pets or bicycles permitted in or around weight pen.
Offensive or unruly behavior/language is not permitted.
No smoking, eating, drugs or alcoholic beverages permitted.
No radios or boom boxes allowed in workout area, stage or surrounding area.  Headsets only.
Dropping weights on floor or benches is not permitted.
Do not place weights on floor or benches is not permitted.
Do not place weights (plates, dumbells or bars) on benches.
No sitting dumbbells.

ABOUT THE TIME CAPSULE:
(12.13.09  VENICE, CA)  Venice Beach Recreation Center, a Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility had its third annual Muscle Beach Toy Drive.

At 1:00 p.m., two time capsules were buried inside the concrete stage at Muscle Beach, in recognition of its 75th anniversary, which was commemorated at the annual Mr. & Ms. Muscle Beach Bodybuilding, Figure, and Bikini Competition on July 4.

Several bodybuilding icons attended, including: Joe Weider, former Mr. Olympians Franco Columbu and Samir Bannout, former Ms. Olympia Cory Everson and former Mr. Universe Bill Grant. 1948 Miss Muscle Beach Sara Clark was also present who has letters buried in the time capsule donated by Jill Prestup from the Venice Historical Society. Councilmember Bill Rosendahl (11th District, in which Venice Beach is located) will present a special proclamation to Weider for his support of Muscle Beach.

Iron Man Magazine and Bodybuilding.com presented the events, produced by Joe Wheatley Productions and hosted by the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Division.

MUSCLE BEACH GYM:  Outdoor gym with free weights, machines, power rack, powerlifting bumpers & more. Bodybuilder Hall of Fame also found here.  Open daily: 8 am-7 pm.  $10 day pass. Weekly pass $50.  Year pass:  $190

BASKETBALL COURTS:  3 regulation & 1 stadium size court.

CHILDREN’S PARK: 2 play areas with swings and slides.

BOXING AREA:  6 speedbag platforms, 2 heavy bag areas.

GYMNASTIC AREA:  Also know as the “sand pit” includes:  2 rings set, high and low parallel bars, balance bar, horizontal bar, and 2 climbing ropes.

SKATEPARK: 27,000 sq. foot park,including 2 bowls, snake run, rails, stairs.

SKATE PLAZA:  rails, mini-wave, transitions.

ROLLER SKATE PLAZA:  Live D.J. and dancing every weekend.

BIKE PATH:  The bike path that runs along the beach spans 17 miles, from Pacific Palisades to the Palos Verdes peninsula.  No pedestrians on path!

HANDBALL COURTS:  4 three wall courts and  3 one wall courts.

PADDLE TENNIS COURTS: 11 courts.  Instructors on hand to teach.
