Jay’s Rentals’ Javier Cernas

Jays’ rentals has been renting bikes, blades, surfboards and skateboards to Venice locals and visitors alike for almost 19 years. And, now they have opened a retail store where they sell new surf/skate/bike equipment as well. Today, we are going to get to know the man behind the brand, Javier Cernas.

Javier started Jay’s rentals in 1997 after working for a beach concession rental company. Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, moved to Venice in 1990 and says he is “thankful for the Venice community that welcomed him with open arms.”

I have known Javier for years and have witnessed his compassion and “be of service” philosophy first hand. It makes perfect sense that Javier cites the inspirational tale of Paulo Coelho’s Alchemist as one of his favorite books.

Over the years Javier’s business has grown to include surf lessons, over 100 bikes and 40 boards,a separate retail location and a fruit and kettle corn shop.

Javier says one of the biggest reasons for his success is to remember that everyone has a talent and to find and use that talent.

So, next time you need a bike, stop on by Jay’s rentals on Windward and Speedway. Javier is a hands on owner, usually there handling rentals and maintenance alongside his staff.
