Scientific Wrestling was founded in 2003 by Jake Shannon while living near 24th Avenue and Speedway. Since then, they’ve lead the global resurgence in interest in the sport of catch wrestling. Jake started coaching catch wrestling at Redwood’s Boxing Gym, near Winward Circle, eventually setting up his catch wrestling club at SAMOHI, thanks to Coach Mark Black..
April Fool’s Day weekend saw the Venice-born submission wrestling organization Scientific Wrestling launch its worldwide training camp tour here at the Santa Monica High School wrestling room. Legendary heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) champion Josh Barnett led a group of athletes from all around the world in learning the ropes of an esoteric brand of submission wrestling known as “catch-as-catch-can” or “catch wrestling” for short. It was two full days of grueling wrestling training where participants learned takedowns, throws, pinning combinations, and submission chains, from one of the best in the world.
