Surfside Venice, located in the old Danny’s spot, held a friends and family event on Wed. June 21, 2017 in order to get some of the kinks out before the grand opening on July 13, at which Peace Frog will be playing.
Surfside is owned and operated by the folks that own SameSun Hostel, which is upstairs in the same building. They have a great team working on the restaurant, and have a huge interest in being a welcoming member of the Venice community.
It was a fantastic, star studded event! Daniel Samakow, the owner of Danny’s, Canal Club, and James Beach, Surfside owner Craig Kelly, muralist Rip Cronk, VeniceBeachPhotos.com‘s Rae Rae, Artist Trek Thunder Kelly, local rockstar and RadioVenice founder Michael Jost, General Real Estate’s Anne Everest, and Venice Paparazzi’s Edizen Stowell, were just a few of the Venetians on site to partake.
The fully hosted affair had a wonderful selection of organic produce, sustainable seafood, and humanely raised meat. As well, the bar was deep, with a great selection of draft beer, and inventive, high end cocktails.
There was much reminiscing about Danny’s and Venice in general among the crowd, as well as a very optimistic vibe about the direction of Surfside.

I sat down with Surfside Venice‘s project manager Leni Koen, to get some of the cool details:
Jesse Gutierrez is the head chef – previously at paramount studios, and will be assisted by Venice OG Chef Kurt Skelton.
Lance Sellers is the GM – previously at Barn Yard in Venice
They will have live music on Thursday, and a raised stage will be where the west doors are.
Surfside uses all compostable, veggie based straws, and 100% recycled paper products.
The Rip Cronk murals that decorated Danny’s, are still there underneath new drywall.
They hire local! Jenny Hashim is the manager, Dakota Rayfield is a bartender, and Heatha Bee and Christina Marquez are servers.
All of the historical artifacts of Danny’s will be moved to Canal Club for a museum.
