“40 Years Ago On The Venice Canals”

This press photo from 1971 shows the canal clean-up gang as they pole along through their daily routine.  Stagnant and debris filled with crumbling banks, the remaining Southern canals were something far from their current manicured & desirable glory.  It was about this time that street poet Claire Horner deemed Venice, “Where the Debris meets the Sea”.  Canal resident MaryJane recalls Domingo as the skipper in the photograph while the crew members remain unidentified.  Paul Tanck remembers the vessel being moored near his then-residence on Eastern Canal – locals called it the “Garb-Barge”.  Ah, but I’ll bet they discovered some treasures too…
