Here is a message from Visit Marina del Rey!

A cloud of 40,000 vibrant streamers greets visitors to Burton W. Chace Park through July 1, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors (DBH), the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and local artist Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics.

Shearn’s Sunset Vestige is a 5,000-square-foot Skynet piece consisting of more than 40,000 streamers that dance on the ocean breeze. The vibrant artwork emulates the glow of a California sunset, contrasting with the serene, coastal ambiance of Marina del Rey.

“We are excited for the opportunity to bring such a unique piece of art to the Marina, where it will be seen by residents and visitors from all over the world,” said DBH Director Gary Jones.

Shearn’s signature Skynet artworks are designed to evoke the natural phenomenon of flocking, like schooling fish or swarming insects. Suspended using transparent monofilament netting and rigged inconspicuously, the colorful streamers appear to float on their own, fluttering in the wind at each site.

As part of the project, DBH, the Arts Commission, and Poetic Kinetics are asking visitors to answer the question, “If this artwork could dance, what song would it dance to?” by creating videos of the artwork cut to their favorite music. The videos can be posted on social media with the hashtag #sunsetvestige, and every week, Poetic Kinetics will share the most creative video on its social media channels.

Sunset Vestige will be on display through July 1 at Burton W. Chace Park, located at 13650 Mindanao Way in Marina del Rey.

  • Find food trucks at  “The Beach Eats” at Mother’s Beach!   Head to the parking lot at Marina Beach on Thursdays, May 4 through September 28, for dinner with a waterview! A rotating selection of food trucks sell food from 5 to 9 p.m. Bring chairs or a blanket for a picnic on the sand, or grab a table under the covered picnic pavilion.
  • Visit Burton Chace Park!  Burton W. Chace Park has 10 acres of lush lawn and trees that extend into the Marina’s main channel. Here you will find magnificent boat and ocean vistas.  In addition, the park offers picnic tables, barbecues, pergolas, picnic shelters, guest docks, and is host to numerous year-round events.
  • Live concerts at Burton Chase Park.  
  • Visit Fisherman’s Village!   Fisherman’s Village is a 1970s’ era replica of a New England seaport and ishing town. You can still stroll the quiet harborfront to enjoy views of the Marina. There are several restaurants, and a smattering of shops and galleries. You can also rent a boat, go parasailing, or take a harbor dining cruise on the weekends. Free weekend concerts year round.
  • Have a beach day at Mother’s Beach!  Swimming (no surf), Children’s playground, Picnic Tables, Windsurfing, Kayaking, Free boat launch for hand-carried boats, Restaurants, Hotels, Restrooms, Showers
  • Paddle boarding at Mother’s Beach is a must do activity!
  • Go Deep Sea fishing or Whale watching.
