Here is a message from Venice Skate Dance Association!

To celebrate the milestone of unveiling a newly resurfaced Skate Dance Plaza, the Venice Beach Skate Dance Association will host its Skate Against Hate and Violence Weekend kicking off Friday, August 9th and concluding at sunset on Sunday, August 11th.

The highlight of the weekend is promising to be the first ever Venice Beach Roller Disco event being held the evening of Saturday, August 10th from 7 p.m. until closure of the Park.  The outdoor public skate area will be transformed into a glossy discotheque with live DJ, photo booth, and a cinematic montage of roller skating nostalgia tracing the history of the iconic outdoor roller dance culture that was born in the mid 70’s with the advent of the polyurethane skate wheel and found its’ most famous home steps away from the Venice Beach Boardwalk.

With the exception of a small number of local natives, few realize that the popular weekend recreational pastime of dancing on roller skates to an amplified soundtrack has endured in Venice for over four decades.  Through the changing landscape of its physical location during Venice’s revitalization project in 1999 to the crashing tides Silicon Beach has unleashed on its now gentrified surroundings, the communion of all walks of life that intersects into the Venice Beach skate dance community remains a cultural time capsule of an almost forgotten era to the thousands passing through Venice Beach every weekend.

The Skate Against Hate and Violence Weekend serves as a reunion of roller dancers across four decades and thousands of miles who come to pay tribute to their rich cultural past and celebrate a continued commitment to the Venice community of remaining one of its officially designated public recreational attractions for generations to come. The weekend event program is available on the Venice Beach Skate Dance Association website along with a link to an event registration page.  Space at events is limited so event organizers highly recommend registering in advance to ensure admission.
