New Year’s Day Venice Penguin Swim update

New Year’s day on the beach in Venice is traditionally a super fun, energy packed, experience.   Hundreds of bathing suit clad locals converge on the breakwater for swimming, socializing, photo ops, and more.  Always in the crowd is Norkie the giant penguin, cheering on the competitors and participants in the 500 yard challenge swim and the 50 yard fun dip.

But this year there is no official event.  Like most cool things, the covid lockdown has forced cancellation. However, the beach is still open and all are welcome to jump in the water and start the new year with a huge dose of cool salt water invigoration!

Here is a message from Southern California Aquatics’ Kathryn Iannucci.

This year would have been the 61st Annual Penguin Swim sponsored by the Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ).  SCAQ Swim Club! But due to the social distancing guidelines this year’s Penguin Swim has been canceled.  We will miss seeing everyone down at the beach New Year’s Day for a quick dip in the Pacific Ocean. For those that plan on carrying on this tradition on their own stay safe and always swim where there is a lifeguard.
