A Green Goddess Education feature!
Article by Foottraffik
When the blues (or a global pandemic) have got us down, the staff at Green Goddess rely on one of life’s simple pleasures: Stoner comedy movies. Whether they’re sly, silly, or—let’s face it—kind of dumb—they just have a special way of lifting our spirits.
Obviously, if you’re going to commit to watching stoner movies, it’d be a shame to miss out on the “stoner” part of the equation. Whether you love top-flight flower, vapes or edibles, you already know where to find it. The next step is to choose the best streaming movies platform and settle in for a giggly, stress-relieving evening on the couch. With that in mind, here’s our list of top stoner comedy movies, selected just for you.
Best Stoner Movies: A Curated List
Dazed and Confused, 1993; available on Amazon Prime
With a title like that, there was no way Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age classic wasn’t going to make the cut. Set on the last day of high school in 1976, this ode to getting ripped and rocking out features a young and relatively unknown Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, and Milla Jovovich. Alternately sweet, bawdy, and unsentimental, it’s gone on to become one of the most-loved stoner movies of all time.
This Is the End, 2013; available on Hulu
When the apocalypse coincides with James Franco’s celebrity party, the guests are reduced to squabbling amongst themselves as their supplies dwindle and they contemplate the end of the world. The premise may be thin, the plot thinner. But this flick is packed with a stellar ensemble cast, and it rarely lacks for belly laughs and hair-raising moments.
The Big Lebowski, 1998; available on Amazon Prime
Though Jeff “The Dude” Bridges claims he was stone-cold straight during the filming of this bona-fide classic, you might be hard-pressed to believe him. A thoroughly ridiculous mistaken-identity caper featuring kidnapping, bowling, and a beloved (and hideously abused) rug, The Big Lebowski manages to be both razor-sharp and hilariously dumb all at once. As such, it’s ranked one of the most consistent best streaming movies of all time.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High, 1982; available on Apple TV
Another coming-of-age high-school movie, Fast Times gave the world its first look at Nicholas Cage and Eric Stoltz, as well as featuring a young Forest Whitaker. But the scene-stealing award goes to Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli, the perpetually stoned surfer who faces off against strict and hidebound teacher Mr. Hand, played by Ray Walston. Funny, fast-paced and heartfelt, it’s a stoner movie that even plays great unstoned.
Pineapple Express, 2008; available on Vudu
Featuring many of the same central players as This Is The End, Pineapple Express is even more explicitly a stoner movie. Hinging on a very stoney premise—that a fearsome drug lord could trace some unwitting witnesses to a crime by analyzing the cannabis strain in a roach—the movie is an action movie, a send-up of police procedurals, and a prime example of what results from giving stoner actors several million dollars: One of the best stoner movies of all time.
