SPOGOMI is a social sport where teams compete for points based on the amount and types of garbage collected within a time limit in a designated area. As marine debris becomes an increasingly serious global issue, and recognizing that much of the ocean waste originates from land and urban areas, this event aims to reduce garbage from flowing into the ocean, while raising awareness of marine debris problems. With the slogan “Garbage collection is a sport!,” SPOGOMI has become a unique competitive activity and has exceeded 150,000 cumulative participants since it started in Japan in 2008.
“SPOGOMI” will be held at Santa Monica Beach on Saturday, August 30, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
The charm of SPOGOMI is that, not only does the competition result in the cleanup of garbage, anyone has the chance to win regardless of age or gender, through teamwork, strategy and tactics.
“THE NIPPON FOUNDATION SPOGOMI WORLD CUP 2025” will be held in Japan for the second time with more than 35 countries attending from around the world.
The winning team from this Santa Monica Event will win round trip tickets to represent their nations at the World Cup, scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan on October 29th 2025.
