EATING HEALTHY AT THE BEACH

Hello there readers!  Alex here.   Today we will answer a question that haunts many of the folks that walk our seaside strand.  Where can you get something healthy to eat on, or near, the boardwalk?  We all know that there are plenty of places to get rippin’ boardwalk pizza, sausages and soda.  But what is one to do when the taste for grease gives way to a hankering for something healthy. Drink a beer, that is what!!!  Just kidding.  Venice possesses a plethora of healthy options.  In fact there are too many to list in one article.  So, I will break this subject into a few catergories.  Today’s post will focus on small specialty health food spots.  So, whether you are detoxing or in training, here is the inside line of healthy eats in Venice.

1.  The Cow’s End Cafe.  “Family Owned Since 1989”  “Where the Locals Hang” …and where the Local Pooch Hangs Out!!”  Open from 6 am to 9 pm weekdays and ‘til 10pm weekends. Coffee, sandwich & smoothie bar, salads, wraps, juices, baked goods, and more.  34 Washington Blvd. | thecowsendcafe.com | 310.574.1080

2.  Poke Poke   They have Hawaiian style tuna sashimi, beef poke’,Acai, brown rice and more.  This place is straight raw, as in they have no kitchen.  Seriously, they do not have a kitchen, only a rice cooker.   Good for your body, good for your soul.   Aloha.  www.poke-poke.com.   1821 Oceanfront Walk.

3.  Fruit Gallery-   1 Westminster Ave, right by the boardwalk, FG has it all!  They do every kind of juice imaginable, E3 Live, wheatgrass, smoothies, salads , wraps and more.  Plus, there are locally owned by James and Nina Merced.  So, you can do your body and local small business a favor, all in one shot.  Wooohooo!!!

4. Windward Farms-   152 Windward, near the corner of Pacific. WF has an awesome sandwich, quesadilla and smoothie bar. As well, they sell fresh produce, including  young Thai coconuts, fresh figs and persimmons. They even have fresh squeezed juice to go and wheatgrass.  Right on Windward Farms, keeping the Venetians  healthy!

5.  Cafe Collage– 1518 Pacific Ave., on the corner of Windward. Owned by the very cool Steve, CC opens at 6:30 daily to get the locals their caffeine fix.  But it does not stop there, they have healthy breakfast burritos, salads, wraps, Naked Juices and a wide variety of teas.  My favorite is toss up between a smoked salmon bagel and veggie burger with sprouts, both served with garden salad. Yummmers!!
